handmade felt woman's fedora grey with bamboo and silk decoration

Fedora or Trilby?

With this hat I wanted to have a simple, classic shape and a simple Japonesque decoration.  Sort of like one of Richard Misrach's photographs of the Salton Sea, where you don't know whether you are seeing sky, sea or both.

The Second Purple Hat

Here is the second purple hat that I made for my chic friend.  This one looked great on her versus the cloche, which looked like it was trying to capture all her curls....

Roaring 20's Hat

This cloche is one of two purple hats that I made for a very chic friend.  She got to choose which one she wanted and the cloche stayed behind while the fez went with her.  (It was a needed lesson in learning about very curly hair and how those images of flapper women always show them with _close cropped_ curls, not extra luxuriant ones, like my friend's hair).

My first Sale!

This brown cloche was made for a childhood friend who adores chocolate.  Doesn't it look like a truffle?  However, not very loyally I sold this hat immediately at my first craft fair.  Oh, well, I will make her another one and it will be her size this time.  No idea if she wears brown.

Hat Evolution

This hat was made for another far away friend who (like me) is fascinated with plants.  A long time ago she made one of my favorite tee shirts by stenciling around oak leaves.  I wore it until it disintegrated. Nowadays, her creative output is in garden design AND in the most luscious botanical Photoshop collages.

Classic Beret with a Twist

This is another "Queen style" beret which I made for a delightful friend in California, who I met when my twelve year old son was a toddler.  She wisely coined such observant phrases as 'mommy dating' and 'slacker moms.'  We happily got to do these things in the in the very pleasant playgrounds of California. Wish she was here for the damper climes of England.

Robin Hoody Hat

This hat, in a fedora shape, was made a while back for my youngest son's beloved teaching assistant. Sometimes I observe a person and wonder what kind of hat she would like, or even the shape or mood. Then I ask what her favorite color is and wonder how did I imagines blue?

Birthday Hat

My rather slender dad is always cold, so cold he flees the chilly winters of the East Coast of America for warmer Arizona.  He is one of the few people who always wears a hat, usually a baseball cap, in that way that older men do, at least in the USA.  Living in England I've spotted 'him' a few times; usually it is an older American visitor, taking in our fine flint churches, or perhaps visiting our other thousand year old cultural hotspots.

Ribbonwork

This blue and white beret was inspired by the Willow Pattern of China and a friend's amazing blue eyes.  It is decorated with a few ribbonwork roses made of felt and satin ribbon.

I've read during the millinery heyday of the past that there were specialists within millinery who only made fabric and ribbonwork flowers.  It was fun go through Helen Gibb's Ribbonwork book and try to make different flowers; however, the decoration somehow makes the beret look too old fashioned.

Another Playful Hat

I made another fish beret because I love how the tail flips up on the hat.  Might want to try this with a 'regular' beret.   It is fun how one imagines how a hat will look, makes it and then, even more ideas come a poppin'.
